Its official. Maison Martin Margiela and Alexis Mabille can now be called ”Couture” Houses since they have been awarded haute couture appellation by the Chambre Syndicale, French fashion’s governing body Not a small honor i’d say. What is interesting is that both houses are new to the couture world. With other Houses existing decades before, Mabille showed its first couture offering in 2008, while Maison Martin Margiela is far more astonishing new, debuted in July this year.
There are certain rules,of course, for a label to achieve couture status and first of all is the quality of the garments produced. They must also produce a certain number of shows a year as well as having a specific atelier size.
Call me old fashioned but i can’t avoid but wonder how Alaïa remains a correspondent member while Maison Martin Margiela is now a couture House?,
I have been acquainted with the work of both and can tell that the Mabille case is a clear couture one but allow me to hold my doubts on why have MMM gained this honor at this specific time.Adapting with modern, more popular requirements is necessary for fashion to exist but it should be done carefully or you’ll spoil what you’ve built.Thing the Givenchy case, they risk more than we were expecting to.We’ll see.
