Indeed its a fact! French fashion designer Nicolas Ghesquiere is leaving the Balenciaga fashion house, the same one that himself turned into one of fashion’s hottest properties. And there may lies the reason for his leave..
Ghesquiere took over as creative director of the storied Balenciaga fashion house in 1997, raising its profile among the Paris labels. He leaves Balenciaga after 15 years as the house’s creative director. The brief announcement in Women’s Wear Daily beared no word as to what prompted Ghesquière’s departure, voluntary or not.Yet there might be an explanation. Over the last years, the designer has presided over Balenciaga during a period of tremendous growth (particularly in its accessories category with trend-setting best-sellers like the motorcycle handbag) The accessories department made the statement of a cerian ”Balenciaga” style but sales on apparel didnt exactly follow.Inside the fashion world there was rumour about a new ”version” of Balenciaga, able to exist in a fashion universe where Maison Martin Margiela and its collaboration with H&M is hot news.
Ghesquiere and Balenciaga say in a joint statement Monday that they have come to a “joint decision” to end their partnership at the end of November.A polite yet intriguing statement. And then?
Balenciaga CEO Isabelle Guichot confirmed that Ghesquière’s successor would be named “as soon as we’re ready“.”My biggest interest is to focus the organisation, accompany the team and develop the brand potential, so it’s in my interest to do it as soon as possible,” she told WWD. “[The] brand is strong enough, developed enough and structured enough to express itself without fear.””It was an incredible tenure for Balenciaga, in its creativity, its content, its length,” Guichot said of Ghesquière’s tenure as creative director. “Nicolas has many talents, he needs to express his talent and I’m sure he will do so.” In a rival label perhaps?Or shall we expect a line of his own name? Most potential candidates?According to the rumours that have set fashion world mad there could be Alexander Wang, Joseph Altuzarra, Bouchra Jarrar and Christopher Kane – although nothing has been confirmed. Something tells me though that Altuzarra and Kane are safer bets.
